As of January 1, 2016, several new laws went into effect as of January 1, 2016.

SB491:  This law, among other things, makes it unlawful to wear headset covering, earplugs in or earphones covering, resting on, or inserted in both ears, while operating a motor vehicle or bicycle.  This law does not apply to persons operating emergency vehicles, construction equipment or garbage trucks while wearing a headset or safety earplugs.

SB 61:  Driving under the influence.  This law extends the exiting Ignition Interlock Device (IID) pilot project to July 1, 2017 for Alameda, Los Angeles, Sacramento and Tulare Counties.  This program in these counties require the driver convicted of a DUI to install an IID for five months after the first offense.  After the second offence, 12 months.  After the third offence, 24 months, and 36 months for any fourth or more offense.  The project was to sunset January 1, 2016.
