Community Spotlight – Michael Stump

Borton Petrini’s Community Spotlight

Michael J. Stump has been a member of the Oversight Committee for the Indigent Defense program for two and a half years. Michael took some time to tell us more about this association and what he loves about it.

Why did you first get involved in the IDP Oversight Committee?  I was invited to join the Oversight Committee by its current Chairman and elected to participate in serving the local legal community and to support an essential function of the Kern County Bar Association.

What inspires you the most about the IDP Oversight Committee’s work?  Since joining the Oversight Committee, I have come to appreciate the hard work and dedication of the professionals and staff comprised of the IDP.  I am inspired by the number and quality of attorneys willing to step up and advocate for those among us who need high-quality legal representation.

What is your most memorable moment with the IDP Oversight Committee?  I am grateful for my time as a member of the IDP Oversight Committee because of the many opportunities afforded me in that position to watch as smart, successful attorneys give selflessly of their time and resources for the good of our Bar Association, Court system, and community.  It is inspiring to recognize the many people with plenty of demands on their time who are nevertheless willing to step up and serve the greater good.

What are ways that members of the community can support this organization? Members of the community can support the Indigent Defense Program by recognizing that invaluable service provided by that program and the organizations that support it, including the Kern County Bar Association, the County of Kern, and the Kern County Superior Court.  We all expect that, if needed, we should all be entitled to quality representation.  The IDP program works tirelessly, and mostly in the background, to ensure that such is the case for hundreds of our fellow citizens.
